The Barnstormer Mark III Relentless pursuit of perfection. NEW! The Barnstormer Mark III is the third iteration of our very light, 130 grain hollow-based .45 bullet. The Barnstormer concept was developed to allow .45 shooters to run a round that shoots fantastic even at velocities as low as the minimum SASS power factor will allow. That's right, this .45 bullet, in Cowboy .45 Special cases, can run at recoil levels no .38 shooter can beat. The Barnstormer Mark III is the latest version, with some improvments over the previous model, including a thinner "skirt" at the base allowing for more positive obduration, even at low velocities, an improved nose design to make the bullets cast cleaner, and to improve the "weight forward" balance for accuracy, as well as a deep, ogive-shaped hollow base cavity to compliment the thinner skirt (see the cutaway bullet above). The bottom driving band has been lengthened slightly, improving the BC and CG of the bullet for accuracy, and increasing the bearing surface which helps slow em down in the rifling, while making the bullet track better and resist tumbling. The new Barnstormer mould is a work of art, the cavities cut by renowned mould maker Steve Brooks, of BPCR fame. The "automatic" conversion, allowing the bullet to be made on the Master Caster, was done by Erik Ohlen, the Hollowpoint mould magician, building upon a design we pioneered for the previous Barnstormer version, a techology now matured and extremely reliable. These two guys have done some outstanding work. The result is a bullet of highest quality, superb concentricity, and overall about as good as any "cowboy" bullet yer gonna find. Erik tells me this design is "almost impossible to cast", with the deep hollow base and thin skirt, but with careful attention to mould temperature and timing of the casting machine operation, we're getting some superb bullets. As always, these are cast soft, an alloy of WW and pure lead no greater than 10 BH, making them well suited to low velocity use.
